Libyan ban lift paves way for Islamists to run for control of government

Tripoli, Thu, 03 May 2012 ANI

Tripoli, May 3 (ANI): Libyan authorities have reportedly dropped a ban against forming political parties based on religion, tribe or ethnicity, paving way for Islamists to run for control of the government.

Libya's interim National Transitional Council announced last month that it intended to ban political parties based on religion, tribe or ethnicity from participating in elections.

The announcement angered Libya's Brotherhood's Freedom and Development Party, which vowed to challenge the council's decision.

According to Fox News, Salwa Al-Dgheily, a judicial council member, has now said that the ban has been lifted.

"The proposal to ban religion-based parties has been dropped, and so any party or political organization will follow the law as it is now," the report quoted Al-Dgheily, as saying.

According to the report, Libya's interim rulers had also passed new laws aimed at punishing Muammar Gaddafi loyalists.

One law imposes a life sentence on anyone convicted of taking part in Gaddafi's propaganda machine. (ANI)
