Rio de Janeiro, March 25 (IANS) The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced an agreement with Chile to exchange the years in which each will hold the Copa America.
As expected, CBF president Jose Maria Marin opted to transfer the duty of organising the 2015 Copa America to Chile Saturday. In exchange, Brazil will receive the 2019 Copa America.
Marin declared that the decision was the most responsible thing to do in light of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
With many projects behind schedule, Brazil did not have the time or the resources to focus on holding another international event such as the 2015 Copa America.
Marin went against the plans of former CBF president Ricardo Teixeira who proudly said that there was no possibility of transferring the 2015 Copa America to Chile.
According to Teixeira, who stepped down from his position due to multiple charges of corruption, Brazil had the obligation of hosting the event in order to prove its competency.
However, with the Copa America out of the way for the meantime, Brazil and the Local Organising Committee presided by Ronaldo can focus on the huge task of preparing to host the world's largest football event, something which Ronaldo has promised will be the "biggest and best ever".
