The Right to Information Act 2005 (RTI) is an Act of the Parliament of India that mandates the government body to timely response to citizen requests for government information. Under the RTI Act, 2005......

The Right to Information Act 2005 (RTI) is an Act of the Parliament of India that mandates the government body to timely response to citizen requests for government information. Under the RTI Act, 2005 any citizen may request information from a public authority (a body of Government or instrumentality of State) which is required to reply expeditiously or within thirty days.

Moreover, RTI Act also makes it mandatory for the public authority or organization to computerize their records and upload over the internet so that most the information pertaining to public interest?s can be accessed easily and citizens need minimum recourse to request for information formally.

Right to Information Act was passed by Parliament on June 15, 2005 and was implemented from October 13, 2005. RTI act applies to all States and Union Territories except the State of Jammu and Kashmir, which has its own act called Jammu & Kashmir Right to Information Act, 2009.

The Act empowers every citizen to:

  • Ask any questions from the Government or seek any information.
  • Take copies of any governmental documents.
  • Inspect any governmental documents.
  • Inspect any Governmental works.
  • Take samples of materials of any Governmental work.
