Marshall Islands: Tiny Micronesian Island Nation
The Micronesian peoples first inhabited the archipelago on Marshall Islands. In 1526 Spanish explorer Alonso de Salazar discovered it. But in 1788 the RMI was named after British captain John Marshall. In 1885 Germany made several attempt to capture Marshall Islands. During the World War I Japan seized it but after a series of battles during World War II the US overthrew the Japanese power. In 1947 Marshall Island along with Mariana and Caroline archipelagos became the U.S. territory. Between 1946 and 1958 US tested several nuclear and hydrogen bombs due to which most of the Marshall Islands remains uninhabited till today. US paid $183.7 millions in order to relocate the people of RMI. In 2000, Kessai Note became the first commoner to become president of RMI.
Culture, Cuisine and Tradition of Marshall Island:
The culture of Marshall Island reflects the influence and domination of its colonial rulers. The intermixing of traditional culture with the modern culture from colonial rule adds distinctive features to Marshall Islands. The American way of living and practices predominates the culture of Marshall Island. The people of the Marshall Island are expert in canoe building, which is the major feature of their craftsmanship.
The Cuisine of Marshall Islands is delicious and rich in nutritious value. The food is prepared in a delicate way influenced from colonial countries like Japan, Britain and America. Staple food of the island includes breadfruit, pandanus, taro, arrowroot, rice, seafood, eggs and pigs. The traditional Marshall Islands Cuisine includes pumpkin with coconut milk sauce, sliced, cooked breadfruit with coconut milk sauce and crushed banana. Seafood is popular among the people of the island and Tuna remains the center of Marshall Island non-vegetarian cuisine.
