This resulted in a historic struggle for independence spearheaded by Mahatma Gandhi, which finally won India its independence in 1947. However independence also brought partition in the form of Pakistan but not before much blood was shed. India and Pakistan have since then fought three wars and are embroiled in the Kashmir dispute, some part of which is under Pakistan occupation. The 1990's saw economic liberalization that resulted in splendid economic growth but also led to ever widening disparities between the rich and the poor.
