Why Ebola is so dangerous?

US, Wed, 05 Nov 2014 NI Wire

Ebola is considered one of the most dangerous diseases in the world as till now there is no effective treatment or vaccine against the Ebola virus. Ebola outbreak in the year 2014 in the West Africa region is the most deadliest and WHO has already declared it as internal emergency.

Till now more than 3,850 people have died this year due to the Ebola virus infection in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Ebola is considered most dangerous disease as the death percentage is very high. Ebola virus is killing 25% to 90% of the patient infected with Ebola disease. So, the chances of getting recovered after Ebola infection is very less. More over there is no vaccine or proven treatment of Ebola virus infection.

The first outbreak of EVD (Ebola hemorrhagic fever) was recorded in the year 1976 in some area of  Sudan (now part of South Sudan), and in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Due to this outbreak 318 cases of infection was recorded where 280 patient died quickly.

In the year, 1976, 284 cases were reported and 56 patient died.

Ebola is one of the very rare and most deadly disease. The symptoms of the Ebola virus is very frightening and it is causing damage to the liver, lymphatic systems, kidneys, ovaries and the testes. The Ebola infections results in heavy bleeding, the internal bleeding causes acute respiratory distress which leads to death.

Why Ebola is so dangerous?

Ebola is highly infections

Although Ebola is not a airborne disease, but it is highly infections and even a low does is enough to infect a healthy person. Ebola spreads though direct contacts with the infected patients or the body parts of the infected person.

No treatment

There is no proven treatment of the Ebola infection.

No Vaccine

Till now there is no vaccine in the market against Ebola virus.

Kill rate is high

According to the current estimation, 54% of the infected patients dies.

Infection growing exponentionly

The number of people infected is almost doubling every three weeks. It is projected that the number of infection will reach some where between 77,000 and 277,000 by the end of 2014. So, Ebola spread is very dangerous and WHO declared it as global emergency.

Highly infectious and migrates to all the parts of the body

Ebola is spreading all the parts of the body and it prevents the immune system of the body from organizing a coordinated attack. The immune system of the body remains unaware of the infection and virus freely attacks the whole body. Immune system knows about the infection at very late stage and it starts tearing the own body instead of destroying the Virus.

If some how doctor is able to keep the patient live for long time the immune system of the body stars destroying the Virus and clears the virus.

Treatment

There was experimental treatment tried in Atlanta was tried on the two Americans and the infection was gone. In this type of treatment the organs of the patients were kept working through intravenous fluids, ventilators and drugs for maintaining the blood pressure. This type of treatment gave them better changes of survival.

But unfortunately this type of treatment is very expensive and in US the cost of such treatment is $1,000 per hour. In West Africa such facility and money is not available for the poor people. The major group of person simply wait to die.

Till now there is no approved medicine or vaccine is available for Ebola treatement.
