Sydney, Apr 20(ANI): The Australian Government has urged Cricket Australia (CA) to speed up its advancement toward an independent commission after it issued a general warning to various sporting bodies to improve their governance.
Cricket Australia's move to an independent commission will be the talking point at its full board meeting next week, days after the government's call to sports administrators to have a good hard look at themselves.
An updated Australian Sports Commission (ASC) guidelines was released by Sports Minister Kate Lundy on Thursday that insisted sporting organizations should be more transparent, accountable, responsible and follow best practice governance.
Lundy said she hoped the guidelines, which updated the 2007 document, would persuade the CA to speed up.
"I think it makes it harder for sports to make a choice not to progress their governance. My expectations are quite high that they will make significant progress this yea," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Lundy, as saying.
Cricket Australia chairman Wally Edwards had said a draft of the planned changes would be produced in February, but the overhaul is expected to take most of this year as some states hold out on extensive change. (ANI)
