Islamabad, Feb 1(ANI): Pakistan Petroleum Secretary Ijaz Chaudhry has said that the Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project, which was expected to be completed by June 2012, has been delayed by at least two years more.
He informed Pakistan's National Assembly Standing Committee on Petroleum and Natural Resources that supply of gas from Iran through Iran-Pakistan (IP) pipeline would only begin by December 2014.
The move comes in the wake of Pakistan facing acute power shortages.
The Pakistan government has also decided to levy a 10 percent gas infrastructure development surcharge on CNG, further adding to the agony of citizens, The Nation reports..
Chaudhry said the move aimed to overcome the power crisis, and it was their policy to maintain a difference of 45 percent between petrol and CNG prices.
He admitted that the gas crisis would linger on for a protracted period if the situation continued to remain the same.
Pakistan is also trying to strike a deal for procuring gas from Turkmenistan under the Turkmenistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) pipeline project, and supply of gas would start by 2016, Chaudhary added.
The Committee was informed that current gas production in the country is over billion cubic feet per day (BCFD) but the demand was six BCFD, and the gap is expected to o around 3,038 MMCFD by 2015. (ANI)
