New Delhi, Jan 15 (ANI): With assembly elections round the corner, there is a possibility of the usage of drugs in poll-bound Punjab. ccording to a senior official from the Narcotics Department, huge quantity of 'Dodachura of opium' is coming from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan to Punjab through the bordering districts.
The Narcotics Department very recently had a meeting with the Punjab Police Additional Director General (ADG), Inspector General (IG), Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Central and State Excise officials as they are playing very important role to coordinate with these states.
The drug comes from Madhya Pradesh and Rajsthan to Punjab through the bordering districts of Hanumangarh and Sriganganagar.
The Narcotics Department has of late identified some districts in Punjab, where the distribution and consumption of Dodachura may increase.
The usage of drugs in poll-bound states has further added to the tensions of the concerned officials, who are at the moment making all efforts to ensure that the use of black money does not prevail in the upcoming assembly polls.
Punjab Police had earlier on Saturday seized huge cache of liquor and arrested people involved in such nefarious activities from various districts of the state.
The police arrested two people with 60 cartons of illicit liquor in Ludhiana.
The accused had discovered a new route to transport large quantities of illicit liquor into the state, when the police surrounded their vehicle and arrested them.
After the Election Commission issued strict guidelines for campaigning during the elections, the concerned officials have been keeping a strict vigil to prevent such illegal activities.
Punjab is one of five states due to hold elections this year. As per the schedule planned by Election Commission, polls in Uttar Pradesh will be conducted in seven phases starting from February 4, while voting in Goa, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Punjab will take place between January 28 and March 3.
