The Kikuyu is the largest ethnic group that migrated to Kenya in the beginning of the 18th century. In 1890 the British took over Kenya from the Portuguese and renamed it British East Africa in 1920. Kenyans launched an independence struggle called the Mau Mau movements in the 1940’s, which finally succeeded in 1963. Jomo Kenyatta, the prominent nationalist leader during the independence struggle became the first president of Kenya.
