The Supreme Court is the apex judicial and magisterial body of Indian democracy, which was inaugurated and commenced its function two days after India became a republic in January 26, 1950. Supreme Court of India consists of Chief Justice of India and not more than 25 judges though its number has been increased now having taken into account the present needs and necessities. The judges are appointed directly by the president on the basis of their seniority, excellence in work and skills. The judges retire at the age of 56 .The present chief justice of India is Dr K.G. Balkrishnan. Supreme has a large jurisdiction over ample of matters having exclusive power over any dispute and contradiction between states or states and center that it takes into account and provides fair decision to both the sides impartially. Being in the zenith of judiciary, Supreme Court can consider any matter over all the courts of India and issues fought in lower courts can be shifted to Supreme Court directly by its order or can be taken by the client. Supreme Court has the grave power to query any state govt. or central govt. if its suspicion arises on any issue of the govt or any issue brings protest in the state or country. Under article 129 and 142 of Indian Constitution, Supreme Court has been endowed with the power to punish any one for disrespecting any law court in India. It mainly safeguards the fundamental rights of citizen and protects the Constitution of India.
