Biju Janata Dal was formed in the year 1997 December after the demise of a great patriot of Indian soil Biju Pattnaik. Naveen Pattnaik, his worthy son is the founding father of this regional political party in India. The party is the replacement of Janata Dal led by Biju pattnaik, which was renamed after his name Biju Janata Dal. Biju Janata Dal is a regional political party in Indian state of Orissa. During a short time of its incarnation the party gained state wide popularity as a consequence of which the party won a great victory in the general assembly polls of the state for twice in 1999 and 2004. Naveen pattnaik, the chairman in 1998 o whwas the minister of mines in the Indian government stepped down and was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Orissa. Thus twice the BJD formed state government in Orissa having the coalition with Bharatiya Janata Party. In the center it has coalition with BJP led National Democratic Alliance. The chief strategy of the party is the all round development of every citizen in the state. It mainly identifies its objective as development of every type in the state i.e. economic, social, industrial, financial, educational tribal etc. Though it is facing criticism from the opposition still is increasing its efforts for the growth of the GDP and per capita income of the state and individuals respectively. In 2004 Lok Sabha election polls the party has won 11 seats.
