Sep 24: Now MTNL is all set to offer a Personal Computer for RS 4500. This will be with internet connection on a monthly fee, in partnership with Chennai–based Novatium.
Communication and IT minister A Raja will launch the low cost PC in Delhi on Monday. This computer, called netPC by Novatium, is a no frills device, this means, most of the common hardware that we find on any normal PC is absent here.
This PC will not have CPU or any storage devices, but it will look and function like any other normal desktop.
The terminals will be connected to a centralised server in the locality by MTNL hence the customers will not face the challenges associated with a regular PC.
Here the customer has a choice to use either Windows or Linux opertating system.
To get this benefit the customer will have to buy the device and a connection from telecom company or internet service providers to access the net.
The Novatium website says, “The netPC reaches to one’s home on a network cable just like a cable television service or broadband. Metro-ethernet deployments are quickly becoming a pervasive reality, and hence instead of just the internet broadband to your home, one can ask for a complete desktop with inbuilt internet access, educational packages, online games, chat, webcam, productivity suites and much more only served on the Nova netPC.”
Chennai-based Novatium Solutions has introduced a "thin client" system , and is capable of handling most routine office work including Internet browsing. With their low costs, ease of maintenance, and protection against viruses, the systems are ideal for use in situations where multiple PCs are required, such as in schools and cyber cafes.
With the launch of such devices providing broadband internet connection will become a household name. High cost of PC has kept uptake of broadband services at a bay.
Also the target of ten million broadband connectivity which the government has set can be achieved by 2008 with this service available at low cost of monthly rental.
This is an opportunity for those who want but cannot afford to buy costly PC, which comes at Rs. 30,000 or above.

This revolutionary idea is most rubish as an offer.
Why would customer opt for a machine which is said to PC only because the offering company does ?
This (Rs. 4500/-)machines are not capable of handling any of office works then just surfing net
Why a Customer should not purchase a Broadband connection and a PC to get a complete PC worth doing all the Office Jobs very easily.
Thin Client technology is just like getting optimum juice out of a lime. But if you go on putting more pressure like what novatium does you may get very "KADVAA" pulp out of it.
