Chandigarh, May 7 (IANS) Haryana recorded nearly 39 percent voting while parts of Punjab recorded nearly 35 percent turnout till mid-day Thursday.
After a sluggish start in the morning, voters kept trickling into polling stations across Haryana, bringing the turnout to a decent 39 percent by 1 p.m.
In Punjab, the polling percentage was below 35 percent for the four parliamentary seats - Bathinda, Sangrur, Ferozepur and Patiala. The main contest is between the Congress and the ruling Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) alliance.
The high-profile Bathinda seat, that is seeing a fight between the ruling Badal family and the Patiala royals led by former chief minister Amarinder Singh, saw the highest voting at over 41 percent till mid-day.
Akali Dal president and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal's wife, Harsimrat Kaur, is pitted against Amarinder Singh's son Raninder Singh on this seat.
People started queuing up at polling stations in rural areas of Bathinda since morning.
In Haryana, the main contest here is between the ruling Congress and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD)-BJP combine.
