BCCI scraps ban on ICL players

New Delhi, Wed, 29 Apr 2009 NI Wire

Giving a lifeline to the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) players, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Wednesday announced to give them another chance to play in the official domestic matches, if the players leave the rival board by May 31.

Making an announcement in this regard, the BCCI president Shashank Manohar told the reporters that after returning to official cricket the players would also be eligible for national selection but for this they would have to wait for at least one year.

This surprise decision of BCCI came in the wake of several appeals from the active former international players and support staffs who have admitted that they have made a mistake and willing to return into the BCCI fold.

Zee promoter Subhash Chandra in 2007 organised a parallel board comprising retired cricketers and young domestic cricketers who were considering extremely lean chance to get selection in the International team. However, the board is yet to get recognition from BCCI and the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Several renowned players like Dinesh Mongia, Ambati Rayudu, Hemang Badani and Rohan Gavaskar, along with coaches and administrative staff like Sandeep Patil, Balwinder Sandhu, Kapil Dev and Kiran More had joined the ICL. In response, the BCCI imposed ban on them.

In further development of ICL, the ICC and BCCI have again rejected the ICL’s application to get the nod and the imposed ban would continue on the rebels.
