Sep 13: The Indonesian government has issued a fresh Tsunami alert following a series of tremor. After the Wednesday quake that leaves nine dead and dozen injured, the quake again struck on Thursday morning that forced the government to issue alarm in the Sumatra coast for the fourth time inside 24 hours.
The recent quake with 7.7 scale on Thursday (today) morning in Indonesia centering 185km southeast of Padang in Sumatra has brought large-scale destruction with the collapse of high rise building. Also some buildings caught fire due to short-circuit, witness reported. The tremor was also felt in Malaysia and Singapore.
Taking them as warning for a huge Tsumani the Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami alert for Indonesia, Australia, India and Sri Lanka. The governments of all the respective countries have also asked the administration to vacate the coastal areas. There are a series of tremor of different magnitude felt in Sumatra after the first one on Wednesday evening.
Earlier on Wednesday evening of about 6pm local time a powerful tremble of magnitude 8.4 of Richter Scale struck the coast that leaves at least 9 dead and 12 other injured (as per official report). The first quake was centered on a radius of 100 km southwest of Bengkulu. Though it was smaller than the Dec 2004 tragedy that took above 160,000 people only in Indonesia and an overall nearly 250,000 including India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia but a constant quake of magnitude 9 and above can create massive destruction.
Rescue workers in Jakarta told that the number of causalities may go high as it was difficult to operate without electricity and communication grounds were damaged entirely.
Indonesian government has sent relief, rescue operators and medical teams to the quake distressed areas and also trying to vacate the western Sumatra coast completely.
Meanwhile the Indian government has asked the Andaman and Nicobar Islands administration to closely watch the situation following the latest quake in Indonesia. Earlier the government of India has issued an alert soon after the first tremor in Sumatra but was later withdrawn as the earthquake emergency deptt. did not notice any looming threat.
