Confusion cloud prevails on Musharraf's action over Sharif's return

New Delhi, Mon, 10 Sep 2007 NI Wire

Sep 10: Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has landed from a plane in Islamabad airport to lead the Pakistan Muslim League party in the upcoming general election to restore democracy. But the present military ruler Musharraf has not clear his stand whether to deport him back to Saudi Arabia or sent to jail and both seem likely at the mean time.

As per the report of the Pak TV channel Geo TV, as soon as the plane landed at the airport hundreds of military commandos surrounded the plane and the immigration officer asked Sharif to handover his passport but the former prime minister refused. Soon after waiting almost an hour in the plane he was later sent to the airport lounge.

Earlier Sharif had refused to leave the airport unless accompanied by his supporters and his lawyer.

The military authority prior to his arrival has detained thousands of Sharif’s supporters and also some top leaders of Pakistan Muslim Legue party. Also roads are blocked connecting to the airport in order to keep supporters away from Sharif. Media is also not allowed to enter the airport premises.

Though it is reported that an arrest warrant has been issued against him but as per government sources no distinctiveness has mentioned so far. The official has been preserving their action against Sharif.

''I decided to travel in a PIA flight due to the changed scenario because it was feared that if I had booked the flight of any foreign airline that would have been cancelled or diverted to other destination on one way or the other,” Geo TV reports.

In fact it was Supreme Court’s decision to allow Sharif to return to the home land. But military rule later confirmed that as the leader of PML is in exile for 10 years with an agreement he should not come back. General Musharraf’s government has also said that his return will destabilise the political environment ahead of general election.

Meanwhile government has cleared its intention to act according to the law of the land. But questions: Will the government jail him, or deport him to Saudi Arabia? are yet to be cleared.
