To Teachers...With Love...

New Delhi, Wed, 05 Sep 2007 Binita Tiwari

The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called "truth."  ~Dan Rather

Teacher…. one who mould our life...Who believed in us in spite of the nagging failure…The lesson we were taught in the school we still carry as a precious possessions. Teachers are very special. We remember them fondly, every time we think of the success we thank them silently in our heart for shaping our future and giving us values.

In India 5th September is celebrated as Teachers' day. This day has an interesting history, when Dr. Radhakrishnan became the president of India in 1962, some of his students and friends approached him and requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday on 5th September. In reply, Dr, Radhakrishnan said, "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if Sep 05 is observed as Teachers' day". The request showed Dr.Radhakrishnan's love for the teaching profession. From then onwards, the day has been observed as Teachers' Day in India.

Dr Radhakrishnan who was born on this day taught at Madras Presidency School as a Assistant lecturer, then he was selected as Professor of Philosphy in Mysore University, always believed that a teacher should be the best minds in the country. He was nominated as Professor of Philosphy by Culcutta University and was invited by Oxford University to deliver a lecture on Hindu philosophy. He also served as a Vice Chancellor to Andhra University and later to Benaras Hindu University. As an Ambassador to UNESCO and Soviet Union he emphasised on strong relationship. He served as Vice- President in 1952 and President in 1962.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who was one of his closest friends throughout, said about Dr. Radhakrishnan: "He has served his country in many capacities. But above all, he is a great Teacher from whom all of us have learnt much and will continue to learn. It is India’s peculiar privilege to have a great philosopher, a great educationist and a great humanist as her President. That in itself shows the kind of men we honour and respect."

His illustrious life as a philosopher and as a teacher made him exceedingly popular among students. He remains as a teacher through out his life and still inspires many.

Former President A.P.J Abdul Kalam on completion of his term, decided to carry on his most loved profession, to teach. He even showed his keen ness to teach in a school set up by Anna Hazare, where only drop outs, and failures qualify as a student.

Kalam who never forget to meet the student wherever he went, shows the belief that every student is his responsibility. He said that it was his teacher’s explanation to how a bird flies, changed his entire life and he chooses aviation as his career. In a convocation in Madurai Kamraj University, after his lacture he bowed down before his high school teacher Iyadurai Solomon and said “Great dreams of great dreamers are always transcended". "You have not only reached my goals, Kalam! You have eclipsed them", replied Iyadurai Solomon in a choking voice.

The most pious and unselfish relation on this earth, who seek happiness in our success, who take pleasure consuming themselves to light our path.

The nation remembers all Teachers with gratitude, who left behind the footprints to follow…

Thanks for your guidance and support !

Hi Binita,

Marvellous one.It is very touching topic and made me to think about our beloved teachers who torched the path of our life.Todays journalism requires to bring such awareness among all of us to remember and give respect to our teachers. At the same time it should not be forgotten by them that they are very much responsibile for nurturing our society and their one mistake could affect many innocent minds.

Regards,

Bhupendra
