Tata Motors, India’s top vehicle maker, has commercially announced the launch of its much-awaited Rs 1,00,000-price tagged ultra-cheap car in Mumbai today. With this, the company too announced the booking of this 4-seater car by the second week of April 2009.
Speaking at a Press Conference, the Chairman of Tata Motors, Mr. Ratan N. Tata, said, “The Nano represents the spirit of breaking conventional barriers. From the drawing board to its commercial launch, the concept, development and productionisation of the car has overcome several challenges. It is to the credit of the team at Tata Motors that a car once thought impossible by the world is now a reality.”
“I hope it will provide safe, affordable, four-wheel transportation to families who till now have not been able to own a car. We are delighted in presenting the Tata Nano to India and the world,” he added.
Tata has described this 623 cc car as the People’s Car, which was expected to hit the market at a price rang of Rs 1.20 lakh to Rs 1.30 lakh, depending on the version. Nano will be available in three variations: Tata Nano Standard, Tata Nano CX, Tata Nano LX; the later two with air conditioning.
Although Nano is the cheapest car and people are eagerly waiting to buy it at the earliest, it would not be easy for the common man to own it as the company has only announced to sell a limited number of cars through strategic selling plan. Its initial booking price is also set higher at Rs 70,000 and will be delivered to some selected customers only.
According to Tata Motors officials, only 50,000 cars will be available in the first year as against the earlier expectation of 2,50,000 cars which was scheduled to come from Singur plant of West Bengal. The strong protest by farmers in the leadership of Trinamul Congress leader Mamta Banerjee had led Ratan Tata to shift the plant from Singur to Sanand, Gujarat.
The Singur protest had also affected the launching of Nano, which was scheduled earlier on last October, but after the shift, the first car from Sanand plant is expected to arrive by 2011. The Tata Nano is currently being manufactured at the company’s Pantnagar plant in Uttarakhand in limited numbers.
