Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh Towhid Hossain said to the press on Tuesday (July 15, 2008) that no accord will be signed on transit issue in foreign secretary level meeting between Bangladesh which is scheduled on July 17, 2008 in New Delhi. Mr. Towhid Hossain is to lead the seven-member delegation of Bangladesh. The last similar Bangladesh India meeting was held in Dhaka on June 25-26 of 2007.
Talking to the newsmen on the issues related to upcoming Bangladesh-India meeting, the foreign secretary explained that no accord will be signed which is not complying with the interest of Bangladesh and said that security, trade and water issues will be discussed with due importance.
He also mentioned that Bangladesh will propose to discuss on marine border determination as it is a long standing issue between the two friendly neighbours. India is also very eager to finalise the issue, Mr. Towhid added.
In media, many items appeared on the basis of assumption and prediction, Bangladesh foreign secretary mentioned and told to the press that his country will emphasize on water issue. ‘We will try to solve the water sharing issue of river Tista, JRC (Joint River Commission) meeting will be an important agenda as JRC does not sit after 2005 for a while,’ Mr. Towhid was quoted as saying to a local press.
On Indian separatist issue Bangladesh foreign secretary said, ‘Indian media are saying about the issue, Indian Foreign Office does not tell any thing. But it is also clear that we never support any separatist groups and of course if India raise the issue with evidence we must cooperate them,’ he mentioned.
Bangladesh-Nepal land transportation will also be an important agenda, which will be proposed by Bangladesh, Mr. Towhid informed the press.
