Aug 16: Speaking at Council Of Foreign Relation in New York, Peoples Party of Pakistan president Bhutto urged Musharraf government to take necessary step for free and fair upcoming election, Benazir Bhutto and Parvej Musharraf have reached a deal to share power. This is seen as the last nail in the coffin to save the Musharraf government.
Musharraf on the eve of Pakistan’s Independence Day confessed of his dimming popularity in an interview given to a news channel. He is facing public protest on the dismissal of Chief Justice of Supreme Court and is also facing wave of militant attack.
Bhutto has confirmed of the negotiation regarding power sharing, who earlier said that she is ready to work under Musharraf government only if the balance is maintained between parliament and presidency.
This is seen as a pressure from US government on Musharraf to restore peace and stability. Also said to be warned by the US government before declaring emergency.
Bush government fear of losing Musharraf to a less reliable ally in campaign against terrorism. US believe that an alliance with Bhutto can give leverage to Musharraf Government facing political crisis. They are seeing this deal as it might help to dilute confrontation between the two.
Bhutto also defended corruption charges against herself, and her collaboration with General as a step to fight fundamentalism and restoration of democracy.
This deal hold promises towards democracy amidst various doubts regarding the compatibility factor required in running the government.
