The Indian Railways have registered an increase of 13.17 percent in its net earnings during April 1 – January 31, 2009 amounting Rs. 64876.34 crore compared to Rs. 57327.00 crore during the same period last year.
As per an official release, the passenger revenue has gone up by 11.82 per cent in the first ten months of the financial year 2008-2009 with Rs. 18042.82 crore in comparison to Rs. 16134.94 crore recorded during the last corresponding period.
As far as goods earnings are concerned, Rs. 5282.14 has been added more during April-January 2009 into last year’s attained revenue of Rs. 38734.12 crore, an increase of 13.64 per cent.
The total freight traffic during the said period shows an increase of 36.59 million tonnes (681.28 mn tonnes) from the 644.69 million tonnes carried out during April-January 2008.
During the month of April – January 2009, the revenue earnings from other coaching amounted an increase of 6.50 per cent from Rs. 1539.31 crore (last year) to Rs. 1639.42 crore during April-January 2009.
The total approximate number of passengers has also witnessed an increase of 6.44 per cent with 5917.86 million during Apr-Jan’09 compared to 5559.89 million during the same period last year.
In the suburban sector, the number of passenger has been increased by 2.93 per cent from 2753.80 million (Apr-Jan’08) to 3074.10 million (Apr-Jan’09). While in the non-suburban sectors there is a 10.78 per cent rise from 2485.79 million to 2753.80 million during the mentioned financial period.
