April 26: The army-backed government in Bangladesh lifted the ban imposed on erstwhile leader Sheikh Hasina yesterday. The former PM has been allowed to enter the country.
Earlier, the administration declared that her return to the country may trigger violence. On previous Sunday the authorities at British Airport did not allow her to board a flight back to the home.
The government further declared that there was no intention to send the Awami League President, Sheikh Hasina and former PM Khaleda Zia into exile.
The interim government has also filed a case of murder and extortion against her. All this has been attributed to the political violence that occurred during the last election. She will have to face these charges in the court after returning to the country.
The government also mentioned that it had never forced Bangladesh National Party (BNP) Chairperson, Begum Khaleda Zia to go abroad and also did not imposed any restriction on her movement.
Meanwhile, the authorities have demanded the national bank and several other commercial banks to furnish banking details of the two leaders.
This whole thing is seen as a part of a mission of the interim government to clean up corruption and start a free and fair election process.
However, Hasina, in her latest statement said that her return has been made possible due to the pressure on government by public and sensitive media.
