Aug 11: The devil of dowry clutched another woman under its claws, chasing thousands of others in the country which often go unreported. The memory of Pooja Chauhan has not faded in the mind that another havoc played by this deep-rooted evil comes to the fore to mock our social development as we are ready to celebrate the 60 th anniversary of our highly prized Independence.
The method of oppression adopted by the husband will leave any human being unnerved and fill with shame and introspection-are we humans? Are we civilized? Where our society is heading towards?
Hina Fatima just 22 year old, her husband threw acid on her and her relatives say that she was being forced to drink the acid mixed with alcohol by her husband. She was being tortured by her husband for a long time physically and mentally. 90% of her face has burnt. She is battling with her life. This disgusting incident took place in Mysore, Karnataka.
Such violence by the husband on the wife is not new in an Indian household. Methods of cruelty vary. It is just that sometimes it comes into limelight and many unfortunate ones don’t.
Such heinous act was done because he found her guilty of not bringing enough dowry to his house. For the last nine years torture ran with nuptial ties. But the whole development compels to think that this society, her parents are equally responsible for her condition. As he threatened such acts earlier why was she sent to that house by the parents. When unable to bear torture she came to her parents why was she convinced to return.
Now they can just repent why they compelled her to return to her-in-laws.
We celebrated a lot our first woman president but we are more used to celebrations rather than action which is needed to cure this leprosy destroying the health of our society.
This time too like every other time people will condemn the incident and will be shocked to hear this brutal act and then this will get blurred in mind with the business in our routine and passing of time. We will not find time to look into the problem and do ‘something’ to kill this demon called ‘dowry’.
Let’s hope that when we land into another year of our independence, we do something to create a favourable environment for our women.
