Owing to the global financial crisis, the Internet service major Yahoo Inc. has finally decided to close down its decade-old online storage service portal ‘Briefcase’, which offers 30 MB of free storage of single file up to 5MB. Users have been informed to retrieve their data by March 30.
Lately, the company had announced layoffs, and its stock price has plunged since the failure of Microsoft-Yahoo merger deal. Moreover, the close down of Briefcase is also due to the fact of increasing competition by other cyber players who offer better services and Yahoo feels that its upgradation would need more funds, which is not feasible at such a time.
No doubt, the data storage industry is growing with the entrance of leading players like Microsoft ‘SkyDrive’ that offers 25 GB free storage and rumours of Google ‘GDrive’ which might come up soon with some interesting Web 2.0 features.
Yahoo has observed that the uses of Briefcase have been declined over the years due to its small storage capacity and with the release of several updated and new technologies by other service providers. The company also surveyed the inclination of customers towards more e-mail programmes and photo-video sharing websites like Flickr, leading to decline in revenue generating.
The company, meanwhile, wants to focus on its more revenue driving services to cope up with the challenging economic environment. Service like Yahoo Mail and Flickr are already providing unlimited storage. However, there is every possibility that the company may come up with a much advanced data storage service in the near future considering the growing demand.
The company has posted the flowing message on the Briefcase site: “You must download or delete your files by March 30, 2009. After this date, you will not be able to access your Yahoo! Briefcase account and your files will be deleted.”
