Mumbai captain Wasim Jaffer on Tuesday awarded the CEAT India Cricketer of the Year 2008-09 for his prolific run score in domestic cricketing arena, while the late Ashok Mankad was posthumously honoured with the CEAT Lifetime Achievement Award.
Jaffer, who has had a good season amassing 1260 runs in 10 matches at an average of 84 runs, received a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh, while Cheteshwar Pujara from Saurashtra won the ‘CEAT India Batsman of the year’ and Dhawal Kulkarni from Mumbai was declared ‘CEAT India Bowler of the year’. Both were given a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a trophy each.
Mumbai player Saurav Netravalkar was adjudged as the CEAT Under-19 Cricketer of the Year award with a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh and a trophy.
CEAT Cricket ratings (CCR) recognize outstanding performances, which comes as the most rewarding title for any cricketer.
Harsh Goenka, Vice-Chairman, CEAT Ltd, said, ‘The CCR Domestic Award function is a reiteration of the close association CEAT has with cricket and our endeavour to recognize the individual brilliances in the domestic cricket scene.’
“In India, where cricket is not just a sport, CCR awards play a pivotal role in paying tribute to not just the cricketing brilliance but also the millions of cricketing fans as well,” he added.
Former leg-spinner B.S Chandrasekhar, who was present at the glittering ceremony as the chief guest said: ‘The award is now one of the most important events on Indian Cricketing calendar as it identifies right talent from the grassroots level to international arena further boosting the performance of those players.
