India greets Obama, hopes to strengthen ties

New Delhi, Fri, 23 Jan 2009 NI Wire

In a letter written to new U.S. President Barack H. Obama, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Thursday congratulated him on assuming office and expressed hope for an extended cooperation in bilateral relation between India and America.

In his letter Dr Singh said that the people of India join him in sending their best wishes. The Prime Minister also reiterated his invitation to President and his spouse Michelle to visit India.

‘The letter focuses on the multi-faceted relationship that is anchored in the common values of democracy, pluralism and respect for diversity, shared by the two countries,’ a statement from the prime minister’s office (PMO) read.

New Delhi after signing the Indo-US civil nuclear deal last year under the George W. Bush administration is hoping for stronger ties with Washington.

Moreover after the Mumbai terror attack last November that is linked to Pakistan based terror outfits, India is willing to take the international force on its side to mount pressure on the nuclear-armed neighbour.

Obama administration within hours of assuming office has announced to review its terror policy in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Terming the growing number of terror organisation in Pakistan a prime concern in the peace of the region, Obama linked the aid to Pakistan to its performance against the fight against terror.

India is expecting a different stand on the issue of Kashmir in contrast to the earlier statement of Obama in which he proposed for the need of a special envoy to figure out ta possible solution. However, terming it only a bilateral concern, India has already refuted any third party intervention.

Meanwhile, a successful election in Jammu & Kashmir in the aftermath of Mumbai carnage would certainly put America on back foot while playing any part on the resolution of Kashmir issue.
