Pakistan’s imbroglio

New Delhi, Tue, 07 Aug 2007 Binita Tiwari

Aug 07: Pakistan with a history of several military coup and enforced martial law is going to enter in an era which holds a promise for new tomorrow.

With upcoming election the political parties are coming into action after the inertia. Pakistan Peoples Party’s president Benazir Bhutto has directed towards the possibility of reaching to an agreement with Parvez Mussharraf’s party.

She is willing to share the same platform with Parvez Mussharaf’s if a balance is reached between parliament and presidency and if she gets the clear mandate by people of Pakistan. But she shows apprehension regarding the uniformed president and fielding of an opposition candidate against president has not been denied.

Bhutto refused to unfold about the talks with the Musharraf government about Abudhabi and other places but she said that they are constantly in touch to reach a solution to take Pakistan on the road of peace. But also inferred that Mussharaf’s bid to hold both offices would be challenged legally

Her main concern is a legal petition she filed five years ago against absentee decision against her. Under this she cannot participate in parliamentary election which she has challenged in the court.

She is negotiating with the present government to get Pakistan on the track of democracy and moderation. She also fears rigging of election which may lead to public protest and will give chance to extremist group to take the advantage of the situation. This reminds of 1977 when riots erupted over allegations of rigging of general election followed by martial law imposed by Zia-ul-Haq, introduction of Islamic penal code and Zulfiqar ali Bhutto’s death

Bhutto is hopeful for the conflict will end and the republic stalled by several military coup and insurgency in the country can be retracted back by peaceful negotiation and election.
