The present political crisis over the Indo-US ‘civil’ nuclear deal has certainly raised several questions among general masses as: is the government trying to conclude the deal in hustle? Has the domestic crisis affected India’s prestige in international scenario? And has the Left permitted ideology by withdrawing support from the government over national interest etc. But the deal has certainly brought the notion of political opportunism; be it Congress, the Left or the Samajwadi Party. On all possibilities and perspectives, national interest should be on the top of political ideology or individual interest.
The Left parties’ withdrawal of support from the UPA is nothing but subsiding national interest and let the communal forces led by BJP gaining momentum in the upcoming elections. The communist’s historical anti-American ideology is well known to all that has taken over their hell-bent step when the country is striving to come out from the present price rise and inflation is hurting the poor and the middle class the most. Doing so, the Left not only gave a chance to the communal forces to rise but also a threat to its own existence. BJP on the other hand has no right to bring a no confidence motion when it is short of the number even if it wants an early general election, which may arise many uncertainties adding woes to country’s immediate economic crisis.
Even if Congress party has found a new bedfellow in terms of one-time political adversary that to a national cause, though by this time one can hope for something better but not the slippery nature of SP. Meanwhile, one shouldn’t forget that a minority government under the leadership of PV Narasimha Rao and the same Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister opened up India’s economy in 1991 resulting in the present economic sea changes.
As far as political ideology is concerned, if there is a need of ideological shift then that should be facilitated in every sphere for national interest. The history of Congress starting from Gandhian era, where its principles of rule were based on simple Gandhian philosophy took turn with Nehru’s secularism, socialist economic policies and a non-aligned foreign policy. The post Nehru era too wrote changes in terms of Lal Bahadur Shahstri’s ‘Jai jawan Jai Kissan’ and later Indira Gandhi’s socialism and a close Soviet Union foreign policy. Then it observed the leadership of Rajeev Gandhi and afterwards a coalition rule under PV Narasimha Rao which brought major economic reforms and globalisation.
The only party, which at present needs to think of national cause ahead of their own interest or ideology is the communist who never had a progressive outlook in terms of national and international policies out of their bag full of ideologies. Prakash Karat should have earlier come out with the same objection of government’s stand with the IAEA documents, moreover, how come a leader of his stature went to the extent of saying that the deal is against Muslim community?
