Aug 03: Elmo.BigBird, Dora the explorer, the sesame street toys under Fischer price level are popular among pre-school kids have been recalled from the market. Mattel is one of the leading companies producing these toys with the help of contract manufacturer in China.
Mattel has estimated the cost of recalled toys to be $30 million. The toys are found to contain 0.6% lead which is a matter of concern. Lead is a very harmful chemical and may cause cancer, brain damage with low I.Q in children and other neurological problems.
In India Mattel India MD Sanjay Luthra said that they have asked the retailers to withdraw the toys and to refund those buyers who are giving back the toys to the retailer. Retailers are telling that it would be not of much effect in India as the toys were not so popular among children. This is also the first incident in India when toys are being taken back for containing harmful chemical. ‘Press and Go Racer’ and ‘Giggle and Gabber’ racer were popular in India manufactured by Mattel.
Mattel Inc. had already restarted the manufacturing of toys but they are investigating the matter of unauthorized lead paint used by the Chinese manufacturer.
After the series of reports of other unsafe ingredients found in Chinese supplied products has clouded the consumer’s belief all over the world. According to World Health Organization, the children are most susceptible to the exposure to such hazardous chemical. While the workers in china are confused as they are unaware of the leaded paint used in the process of manufacturing, again it tells a grim story of carelessness of higher authority. And now the world is watching how they are going to win the trust of dismayed consumer.
