Raipur, Dec 15 (IANS) Two people were killed and about 70 others were evacuated from two villages in Koria district of Chhattisgarh after a herd of wild elephants ran amok, wildlife officials said Monday.
'The wild tuskers trampled to death 50-year-old Dhayan Sai in Sundarpur village and 60-year-old Baratu Pando in Sitapur village Sunday night,' a forest department official said.
About 70 residents of these two villages, which are surrounded by a thick jungle, had been shifted to safer areas fearing more attacks by elephants.
Forest officials said over 43 people have been killed in the state's northern region by wild elephants in the past three years.
