July 10: A team of Australian Federal Police (AFP) is on his way to India for further investigation on Indian doctor Mohammed Haneef’s (27) allegedly links with the failed terrorist attack in London and Glasgow.
The Queensland based Dr Haneef was arrested at the Brisbane Airport on July 02 night and since then he is under Australian Federal Police custody without any charge. One of the friends of Haneef, Dr Ali was also under detention but later released. They both were working for National Health Service in Liverpool.
The investigating team who has been sent to India may question the family members of Dr Haneef living in Bangalore. India has agreed to provide all intelligence to AFP in further investigation. Last week a team was also sent to London to help the Metropolitan Police.
Indian police has been investigating the whole case by questioning Haneef’s family members and friends but nobody has arrested yet.
Meanwhile, the detention of Dr Haneef has been increased to another 48 hours by a Brisbane court. But as until now he is not charged with any crime the lawyer representing Dr Haneef is planning to appeal in the court.
The lawyer had made several points that Haneef was totally unaware of the charges and the case and even the AFP has not briefed him about the whole affair. Even the lawyer has so far been denied access to the police evidence against his client.
However under Federal detention laws, the Magistrate can extend the period of custody holding the importance of the case. According to the terror laws there is no maximum time of legislation and hence one can be detained indefinitely. Also there is no provision for granting bail in terror laws as long as the matter person cleared completely.
Now as the investigating team is coming to India, the federal police may find something satisfactory with assistance from Indian police. Several other doctors in Queensland and Brisbane were also been questioned on Monday but no further arrest has made.
