Kohima, Nov.20 (ANI): Celebrated to respect the womenfolk for their contribution in sustaining the family, the Chaga Gadi was held recently at The Heritage in Kohima.
It is an annual post harvest festival, which is described to be among the most awaited festivals of the Liangmei Nagas.
There are folk songs and dances as well as traditional sports such as long jump and shot put that are centre of attention during the festival. It brings an occasion of merry making, which provides every Liangmei Naga an opportunity to develop peaceful cordial relationship with their other Liangmei Nagas.
Following a custom called 'Aliam' during the festival, men abstain from any relationship with women. It is meant to honour the women. The girls are given a treat and complete rest during the feast called "Aliukuang Kan'.
Neiba Newmai, the organizer of the event, said: "The Liangmeis celebrate Chaga Gadi honoring womenfolk for their contribution in looking after the family. This thanksgiving festival is celebrated after the harvest starting from the last part of the tenth lunar month every year."
Akengiu, a Liangmei Naga, said: "This kind of festival will be able to bring peace in the state. It is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate and share the joys of life. It is also a time when religious barriers are broken and everyone comes together. This is our greatest hope that through the celebration all will be able to live in harmony."
The week-long celebration of the Chadi Gadi is also considered a period of purification for the men. The celebrations conclude with a grand feast. y Vibou Ganguly (ANI)
