April 6: The tragic history of the conflict in Kashmir appears to have entered into the most decisive stage with the chairman of United Jehad Council and Hizbul Mujahidin’s chief expressing the will to participate in the dialogue process.
Sayeed Salahuddin openly hailed the recent statement by National Conference president and Member Parliament, Omar Abdullah, of advocating the participation of UJC and HM chief in the dialogue process between New Delhi and Islamabad.
“The statement of NC president, who represents a pro-Indian party vindicates our stand that dialogue can only be held with Sayeed Salahuddin, and all parties want his inclusion in the dialogue process, a local news agency CNS quoted Hizb spokesman Junaid-ul-Islam.
The statement has been issued at a time when the historic rivals, India and Pakistan, seem to be very positive about the outcome of peace dialogue between the two countries.
Till now the inclusion of the conglomerate of different indigenous militant organizations, UJC, has been demanded by both factions of Hurriyat Conference including the president of the coalition partner of Congress in the state government, Peoples Democratic Party. Now National Conference seems to be ready to take up the cudgels by openly advocating UJC’s participation.
In a statement issued by the HM spokesperson Junaid-ul-Islam, he affirmed the importance of inclusion of militants by quoting Salahuddin, “Without the inclusion of Mujahidin dialogue process is futile.
Salahuddin has repeatedly said that sidelining of UJC in peace talks will make the peace process inconclusive, and to make it fruitful it was necessary to involve the militant leadership, Juniad-ul-Islam reportedly told KNS.
This is not the first instance when pro-India and anti-India organisations of Jammu and Kashmir found them sharing same ‘dais’ and the lines demarcating them moreover got blurred.
When militant outfits targeted mainstream political parties within the state especially National Conference in early 90s, former chief minister Farooq Abdullah advocating full fledged war on Pakistan occupied part of the state. While out of power his party’s cadres sat on hunger strike along with Mirwaiz Led Conglomerate, Hurriyat Conference, outside Chief Minister’s residence, to protest against human rights violation.
After Mirwaiz led Hurriyat Conference showed positive signs regarding their participation in Prime Minister’s second round table conference in February 2006, the brethren carrying arms issued statements compelling him at the eleventh hour to change his mind.
With Omar Abdullah seeking inclusion of United Jehad Council (UJC) and Hizb chief Sayeed Salahuddin in peace talks, all heads are looking for new directions.
