Delhi Police get custody of Key terror conspirator Sheikh

National, Tue, 18 Nov 2008 IANS

New Delhi, Nov 18 (IANS) Delhi Police are set to interrogate Mohammad Sadiq Shiekh, an alleged key terror conspirator of the Indian Mujahideen (IM), on his suspected role in the Sep 19 serial blasts in the capital. A court here Tuesday sent him to 14-day custody.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja granted the city police the custody of Sheikh, who was arrested by Mumbai Police, for custodial interrogation till Dec 1.

Delhi Police said that Sheikh's involvement in the serial blasts was suspected following the interrogation of five accused arrested in the city after the Sep 19 Jamia Nagar shootout, in which two suspected terrorists were gunned down.

The police contended that they needed to take Sheikh to Bangalore and Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh to find out his involvement in the serial blasts.

The police informed the court that Sheikh had been sending out e-mail messages claiming his organisation Indian Mujahideen was responsible for a number of terror blasts.

The court asked the police to get Sheikh's medical examination done every 48 hours.

Sheikh, arrested in Mumbai in October, is a native of Azamgarh.

According to Mumbai Police, he went to Pakistan in 2004 and for nine months received training in handling arms and explosives in camps organised by the Lashkar-e-Taiba.
