Lucknow, Nov 18 (IANS) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) nominee Nitin Agrawal Tuesday won the Hardoi state assembly by-election, defeating his closest rival Sukh Sagar Misra of the Samajwadi Party in a virtually straight contest.
Agrawal polled 65,533 votes as against 41,611 by Misra.
While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had not fielded any candidate, Congress nominee Mithilesh Singh Chauhan put up a poor tally of just 5,737 votes.
Nitin's victory was a foregone conclusion as this seat has been a pocket burrough of his father Naresh Agrawal who held it for seven successive terms.
A party hopper, Naresh was originally with the Congress, where he forged a split to form Loktantrik Congress Party (LCP) of the breakaway group. Subsequently, he crossed over to the Samajwadi Party on whose ticket he had won the seat last year. The seat was rendered vacant after Naresh joined the BSP.
After handing over his traditional seat to his son, Naresh now proposes to contest the Lok Sabha seat.
