Mohammad Asif, Pakistan first bowler, who was held back in Dubai International Airport on suspicion of possessing contraband drugs, has been released from all charges, according to Pakistan Ambassador to the UAE Ahsan Ullah Khan.
The Pakistani foreign official and cricket board claimed that it was a subject of misunderstanding and the player had been given a clean chit. Earlier on Sunday, Asif was detained on his way to home country after participating in the Indian Premier League.
It is confirmed that the cricketer would be released soon and would take the first available flight to Pakistan. The ambassador had earlier said that lawyers appointed to handle Asif’s case were in contact with the Dubai prosecution office and the Pakistani missions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the Pakistan news agency Dawn reported.
The 25-year-old pacer was put under detention upon his arrival in Dubai on Sunday and since then Pakistan authority has been in strong legal and foreign official contact to sorted out the issue as soon as possible and get bail for the cricketer.
As per some reports, the bowler was a bit drunk and after a small argument with the some airport official and in the mean time he slapped one of them which later underlined with Asif’s possession of a small amount of an Ayurvedic medicine that gave the official a reason of his detention.
This is not for the first time that the bowler is involved in any kind of drug scandal; earlier too along with Shoaib Akhtar, he was banned for two year for possessing banned anabolic steroids just before the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy but was later overturned by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
