According to media reports ace Pakistan fast bowler speedster Mohd Asif was detained on Sunday at Dubai airport for allegedly carrying drugs in his luggage. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is yet to come up with any clarification on the report.
The 25-year bowler was returning from India to his home country via Dubai after the completion of Indian Premier League (IPL) tourney while representing Delhi Daredevils.
As per sources, the PCB only came to know about it on Monday and since then it is trying to bailout Asif from Dubai as he was arrested and detained there. He is expected to appear before the magistrate today and Pakistan board will come out with an explanation on Asif issue later in the day.
This is also not for the first time that the bowler is caught in drug controversy, but earlier Asif along with Shoaib Akhtar was tested positive for banned anabolic steroids just before the start of 2006 ICC Champions Trophy.
Both the players were banned for two years but later the ban was removed on appeal by an appellate tribunal formed by the PCB.
Considering Dubai’s stringent law and order procedure anyone crying drugs can be jailed for a period of 4-10 years.
The upcoming tri-series in Bangladesh and the Asia Cup in Pakistan is crucial for the board and any action or ban against the bowler is certainly a big set back to the Pakistan cricket team as Shoaib Akhtar has already been banned for five years for allegedly hitting Asif with a bat.
