Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai to fight for Semis

New Delhi, Fri, 23 May 2008 NI Wire

Thursday (May 22) was a disappointing day both for Knight Riders and Delhi Daredevils as their hopes of making it into the semi-finals of DLF Indian Premier League (IPL) washed out due to rain. With this, though Delhi’s chance to the top four hangs on its last encounter against Mumbai Indians but to all probability Knight Riders are out of the race even though they win their last one.

The last match at Delhi’s Firozshah Kotla stadium was forced to be abandoned due to heavy downpour. Daredevils now have 13 points from 13 games and on the other hand, Knight Riders whose last hope was on this match have only 11 points from 13 games as well.

Rajasthan Royals (Jaipur) and Kings XI Punjab (Mohali) have already cemented their semi-final berth, so now the real contest is between Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils and Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai still have three matches to play for and if it wins at least two then it would confirm its place on top four. Tendulkar-led Mumbai Indians has now 12 points with 6 wins from the 11 matches they have played so far and two other wins would boost their tally to 16 points.

On the other hand Delhi now has to win its next game against Mumbai which would take their points to 15 but still they have to wait for some miracles on the part of defeats to either Chennai or Mumbai in their upcoming games.

At present Rajasthan Royals leads the league with 18 points, followed by Kings IX Punjab on 16 and Chennai Super Kings with 14 points. So if Chennai manage to win one of the two games then they would be placed third on the points map with 16 points. Considering the points and the matches in hand, Mumbai and Chennai are most likely to join Punjab and Rajasthan in Semis.

Today’s match (Date: May 23) Time: 20:00 (IST) Venue: Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali - Chandigarh
