Today is the sacred Buddha Purnima

The nation today celebrates auspicious Buddha Purnima as the 2252nd birth anniversary of Lord Buddha with due religious fervour and enthusiasm. Prayers and special religious activities are undertaken in monasteries and religious organisation of Buddhist community across the country seeking peace, prosperity of humankind.

Although every full moon is regarded by Buddhists as sacrosanct, but the moon of the month of Vaisakh (April-May) has special significance owing to three-fold coincidence occurred on this Day- Lord Buddha was born, achieved enlightenment, and reach Nirvana when he died, giving Buddha Purnima a unique significance.

Gautam Buddha is no doubt a greatest spiritual orator of mankind, which our country has ever produced. The day reminds us to imbibe Lord Buddha’s teachings for the enduring welfare of humanity.

With the passage of time Buddha's teaching not only influenced the Hindu people, but his message travelled far and wide and captured the hearts and minds of billions of people belonging to different races spreading over the globe.

Bodh Gaya in Bihar holds the most sacred place in Buddha's life because all his good happenings are deeply associated with the area, which has made the four sites a pilgrimage for his devotees.

The four sites are: Lumbini, where he was born; Uruvela (modern Bodh Gaya), where he got enlightenment; Sarnath-the place of his first sermon; and Kushinara, where he took salvation.

Besides all over India, Bodh Gaya (Bihar), Sarnath (Uttar Pradesh), Sanchi (Madhya Pradesh), Ajanta (Maharashtra) are the vital places in India associated with Buddha, where Buddha Purnima are celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm.

Apart from India, Buddha Purnima is celebrated around the world- Kapilvastu and Lumbini, Svayambhunath and Bodhnath (Kathmandu) in Nepal; Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Tibet, China, and Japan.

The day marks the ideology of Buddhist philosophy and reinforces the strength of the principles of non violence, compassion and brotherhood.

May this festival strengthen the commitment to unity and fellow-feeling among citizen.
