Democrat Senator Barack Obama creates history by becoming the first African-American President of world’s oldest democracy – the United States of America. Finally, after an impressive two-year long campaign, Obama headed for the White House handing a crushing defeat to the Republican rival John McCain.
The epic battle ended as Barack Obama secured 338 electoral seats against 155 of John McCain, much more than the required 270 magical figures. The 47-year old senator, born to a Kenyan father and an American mother, ending the eight-year long Republican rule proved that the Americans really wanted a change over a series of crisis.
On Wednesday, after his historic win, Barack Obama in a midnight speech said, 'It's been a long time coming but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, change has come to America.’
Adding to that he said, “Even as we celebrate tonight, we know the challenges that tomorrow will bring are the greatest of our lifetime — two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century."
The 72-year old McCain conceding defeat, after a nearly 10-year quest for the White House, asked his supporters to extend their goodwill towards the new president in an effort to bring the nation together.
Among the issues current financial crisis dominated the most as over 62 percent of voters felt the worsening US economy being the prime issue. Both Obama and McCain tried to convince their voters that they are the best candidates, but it was Obama who took the advantage amid the economic meltdown and an unpopular Bush era.
As said Obama, “The road ahead would be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America - I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you - we as a people will get there,” to his supporters gathered in Chicago's Grant Park.
On January 20, 2009, Obama will be officially sworn in as the 44th US President replacing Republican incumbent George W Bush at the end of his eight-year rule.
