Delhi Daredevils put an end to Chennai Super Kings’ winning spree with an 8 wicket win in their DLF IPL twenty20 match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. With this Delhi team tops the point table by four wins out of five followed by Chennai.
Chasing a target of 170, both the openers- skipper Virendra Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir gave a solid start with a partnership of 115 runs in just 11.2 overs before Sehwag got out by Muttiah Muralitharan making a sparkling 71 in just 41.
Sehwag made his intention very much clear attacking Super Kings’ frontline bowlers: Makhaya Nitini and Manpreet S Gony. Running his good gun on this ground where Sehwag had made a Test triple ton against South Africa earlier this year, completed his fifty in just 24 balls. Joginder Sharma finally struck and sent him back to the pavilion for 71 runs.
Gautam Gambhir too made his third half century in this DLF cricket league and chipped in 50 (5x 4s, 1x 6s) of 37 balls. Gony was the successful bowler to take his wicket. MS Gony is also now the highest wicket taker of the tournament with 8 in his pot.
Later AB de Villiers and Shikar Dhawan led the team to the winning total ending 172/2 brining an eight-wicket win and an over to spare.
Earlier batting first the Chennai Super Kings had a run-a-ball start but soon lost the wicket of Stephen Fleming (13) when the score was 23/1(3.2). Parthiv Patel along with Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan did mange ticking the scoreboard. But Patel got out by Sehwag scoring just 21 (20-ball).
However, it was Vidyut who kept the tempo alive and scored a 37-ball 50 and laid a platform for Chennai to set a modest total. He lost his wicket to G.McGrath adding 54.
Dhoni (32 of 27), A.Morkel (28 of 16) and S.Badrinath (11 of 5) were other valuable contributors to Super Kings’ net run.
In the end Sehwag and Gambhir took the game away from Chennai depositing a good opening partnership though an addition of 15-20 run might have some impact considering the final stage of the game.
Before this match the Chennai Super Kings were the only unbeaten team in the DLF Indian Premier League but it seems that the absence of Mathew Hayden, and Michael Hussey, their top two runscorers, the team now has to prove a lot.
