Promising junior and World cadet champion Sunil Kumar and Women’s world champion Sarita Devi alongwith 16 others has been rewarded with cash prizes by the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. M.S. Gill here on Friday.
Sunil got the biggest purse of Rs 11 lakhs for his gold medals in the World Cadet and Asian Cadet championships. Similarly Sarita Devi received the whooping sum of Rs 10 lakhs for her achievements.
A total of eighteen boxers were presented cash awards for their medal-winning efforts in competitions ranging from the Commonwealth Games to the World Championship.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister applauded the achievements of the boxers and lauded the efforts of the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF).
'The boxers certainly deserve all the credit for their achievements at the international level,'' Gill said.
He also assured that the government would extend all possible support to the players to motivate them further to excel in the international arena.
