New Delhi, Mon, 21 Apr 2008 NI Wire

Kolkata Knight Riders team stood by its name and stuck to its task as they emerged winner out of darkness, clinching a five-wicket victory over Deccan Chargers, to post their successive victory in the inaugural DLF Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 league match played at the Eden Gardens here on Sunday.

Chasing the target of 110 in 18.4 overs set by Deccan Chargers, Knight Riders achieved the target in 19 overs in their first home match after scoring 112 for five.

Man of the match David Hussey played a pivotal role in Knight Riders’ victory as he scored a very vital 38 runs off 43 balls to take his side home. The match witnessed full of fun and drama as the Eden Gardens floodlights went off for almost half an hour owing to power failure of one of the tower with Riders’ was 89 for five at that stage.

On resumption, Hussey rolled his arms to produce a massive six and four off Scott Styris to ensure his side sailed to victory with an over to spare. The low scoring chase didn’t start of well as Deccan Chargers picked up two early wickets, that of last match hero Brendon McCullum for five and Ricky Ponting for 16.

The loss of early wickets was looking like a cause of concern for the home team but skipper Sourav Ganguly and David Hussey added crucial 47 runs to steady the innings.

Earlier, Deccan Chargers restricted to a paltry total of 110 after Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds the mainstay of their side was stalled after the loss of Y. Venugopala Rao and captain Laxman.

The Hyderabad batsmen struggled on a slow track with Gilchrist and Symonds getting 23 and 32 runs respectively. Falling of wickets at regular intervals further add misery in Hyderabad’s camp as it also provided Kolkata bowlers an upper hand.

Murali Kartik was the pick of the bowlers from Riders side as he came up with some fine disciplined bowling. Kartik picked up three crucial wickets after giving way just 17 runs in 3.4 overs.
