Salwan Boys lifts All India Boost Cup trophy

Mumbai, Thu, 17 Apr 2008 NI Wire

Delhi’s Salwan Boys School emerged as the proud winner of the Boost Cricket Cup Inter-City Challenge by thwarting the challenge of eight champion schools across the country.

Salwan Boys School derailed the unbeaten streak of Santhome High School, Chennai after comprehensively outplaying them in the finals, registering a massive victory of 103 runs to lift the scintillating trophy, played at the Police Gymkhana Ground.

Guests of honour Harsha Bhogle and Prof. Ratnakar Shetty felicitated the winners, who pocketed a purse of Rs 24,000 alongwith attractive prizes, while the runner-up team took home Rs 15,000.

After remaining unbeaten till the finals, Santhome, Chennai were expected to give the Delhi boys a run for their money, but it went either ways, as their players could not be able to produce the kind of performances that had helped their team to win convincingly in the earlier stages.

Santhome’s decision to field first eventually backfired as Salwan Boys School posted a challenging total of 237 for 7 in 45 overs. Fine half-centuries knocks by the regular performers Sandeep Kaushik (50) and Nitesh Rana (62) and some useful knocks of 30 and 36 from S Vicky and Rajiv Bose lower down the order helped Salwan to reach a fighting total.

Chasing the target of 238, Santhome, Chennai started their proceedings on a positive note as their openers R D Ashwin and S S Xavier put on a partnership of 54 for the opening wicket.

However, that was the lone major association Santhome had before Salwan skipper Sandeep Kaushik sent back both the openers with his quality right arm off breaks. Santhome's innings never recovered from there as the wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals.

There was another brief phase of resistance when the third-wicket pair of M Kamlesh and S Dinesh put on 34 runs, but that was all before their innings folded up for 134 in just 32.4 overs.

Man of the match Yatharh Tomar (3 for 23 in 8 overs) and Shakti Singh (3 for 5 in 2 overs) were the pick of the bowlers in the finals as they claimed three–wickets each for Salwan.

Salwan captain Sandeep Kaushik was rightly adjudged the best all-rounder of the tournament, while his teammates Nitesh Rana and Yatharh Tomar have been declared as the best batsman and best bowler of the tournament respectively.

Brief Scores (Final):

Salwan Boys School, Delhi: 237 for 7 in 45 Overs (Sandeep Kaushik 50 (50b, 4x6), Nitesh Rana 62 (90b, 6x4), S Vicky 30 (52b, 1x4), Rajiv Bose 36 (36b, 3x4, and 1x6), Yatharh Tomar 27 n.o. (13b, 1x4, 2x6), R. Sarwan Kumar 3 for 23 in 5 overs, S S Xavier 2 for 32.
