MTNL offers Lost Mobile Tracking System

New Delhi, Wed, 16 Apr 2008 NI Wire

Customer has become valuable assets of various service providers and a bid to give the customer something they had wished for; the telecom service provider, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited on April 15 offered its customer Lost Mobile Tracking System(LMTS).

LMTS is software which can be downloaded and install for free by the user and is developed by Mumbai based Micro- Technologies.

One of the representative of Micro- Technologies said, “The software can be downloaded for free from MTNL through GPRS and can be installed on almost 250 models of mobile phones.”

International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of the phone is stored after installing the software; IMEI is a unique number that identifies each mobile phone, as well as the SIM (subscriber identity module) card number being used by the customer.

After installation of the software a user has to provide an alternate phone number and email address and if the mobile is stolen and the SIM card is replaced with another, the software sends and e-mail to the customer about the whereabouts of the phone along with the phone number of the new user.

This magic comes only for Rs 30 to the user of MTNL services.

P Sekhar, MD of Micro Technologies said, “We will be providing upgrades to the software which will allow users to delete the contents of their inbox from the stolen phone.”

Executive Director of MTNL J Gopal said, “We expect to provide the service in the next month. The required software will be provided by us and will allow users to watch live video on their phones.”

The system will help user to track the lost mobile and will prove helpful for those who lose their mobile. Probably, it will help keeping the mobile theft at bay.

Dear Sir,
When a SIM Card is inserted in any new phone IMEI code should be registered automatically by MTNL on their system, so that in case of stolen phones it will be easy to track the phone. It will be easy for customers even if they forget to note down the IMEI code.
As in my case I was not aware of this IMEI code.I came across this when my mobile was stolen.

I dont think this is very great. The first thing any thief does is wipes out the software. Ideally this should be offered by service providers like in European countries where once you have an FIR, you can block those IMEI's. So the phone will practically be useless.

Even if user gets an email and new phone number, he will have to track the user with help from police. From attitude of Indian police force, it will be hardly of any help, unless the mobile belongs to some bollywood star or a politician.
And anyway thieves are smart enough to format the mobile as soon as they get their hands on it.

It sounds great and really hope it is offered by other service providers as well all over India, including BSNL. Hope the technology provider gives more details like what happens if the stolen mobile is used with another sevice provider etc?
