President Pratibha Patil’s maiden visit to Brazil will secure many agreements that will enhance the tie between the two countries.
In Sao Paulo, on Sunday while speaking to the entrepreneurs of the Federation of Industries, the president said that India hopes that its trade with Brazil will reach 10 billion U.S dollars in 2010 from 3.1 dollars in 2007.
She stressed on exploiting the resources and opportunity for mutual benefit, while acknowledging Brazil’s achievement in agriculture and food production where India lacks, she talked of India’s strength in Information technology, pharmaceutical products and agricultural equipment.
India is also looking forward to sign major agreement including Oil and Natural Gas, Civil Defence & Humanitarian Assistance, Agriculture and Extradition Treaty.
The agreement on Oil and Natural gas will strengthen India’s energy sector and will provide cooperation between the two countries in research and development which in turn will pave the way to construct large scale pipeline projects.
In agriculture sector the agreement will help providing framework to intensify agriculture research, development, production technology and credit system for small farmers, food processing, animal husbandry and dairying.
Joint Working Groups will be established for implementing the treaties in Oil and Natural Gas and in Agriculture. Also both the countries will exchange skill and experience in rural development to ease poverty through wage and self employment scheme.
The extradition treaty between the two countries will help extraditing any person against whom arrest warrant is issued and the offence is punishable in any countries with imprisonment of at least one year while crime related to finance and revenue, the extradition will take place even if both the countries do not have the same penalty for the offence. However, the treaty will exclude extradition of own nationals by either country and for petty crimes.
Besides a pact in the area of Civil Defence& Agriculture to promote joint exercises and exchange experienced and technical personnel and will work for prevention and reduction of natural disasters by human activities.
On Wednesday Pratibha Patil will address the senate and will meet President Lula Da Silva. Her visit will deepen the bond of the two countries which share strong ties since long and are two of the emerging economic power in various fields.
