Almost after one-year rumors, flickr.com, the part of Yahoo services, has finally launched the video services like its extremely popular ‘photo’ service in its photo-sharing website despite the presence of YouTube and Google Video services which have unanimous sovereignty in this field.
But, Flickr’s video would be different from its competitors, as Yahoo claims it in its official website. “Flickr is trying something new by offering a place for videos that highlight special moments in your life and not commercial content. These ‘long photos’ are great for people who don't know what to do with those short video clips taken with their mobile phone or digital camera, which usually end up buried somewhere in a computer.”
Anyone can see the video, leave comments, tagged and can also share but can not upload the video. Only the premium users who use Flickr service most and have ‘pro’ account can upload it by paying $24.95 per annum.
Flickr video is specific in itself in terms of its content and quality, as the clip’s length cannot exceed 90 seconds and 150 MB. Unlike YouTube and Google video, users can upload only a very specific moment of their life not the entire content.
That’s why, Kakul Srivastava, the company’s director of product management calls it ‘long photo’ instead of ‘short clips’.
One important thing about this service is that the premium users, who upload the video, can own their copyright and make their videos private to selective viewers only by bracketing it for the family or for the friends or specific viewers.
To prevent from the video abuse, Flickr has organised a vigilance team who continuously scan the different video activities, as Flickr claims.
For sharing the video to others, Flickr has provided the option to use direct link or use HTML code to embed directly into a website. The sharing option can also be specified by enabling private settings.
The video service supports a wide range of video formats including MPEG, MOV, AVI and mobile clips and can also be directly uploaded from the digital camera or mobile phones. The uploading system is available in various languages including English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Portuguese and Italian.
The videos are available in the thumbnail form and can be played both, inside the thumbnail as well as enlarged forms.
The reason behind launching this service is not clear so far, but experts believe that ‘Flickr video’ can hike the chances of Yahoo’s search engine services as unlike Google and YouTube, it generates more accurate results for users because of having small and more specific clips.
Flickr.com is a very popular photo sharing website, which have more than 40-millions visitors per day. Viewing its potential, Yahoo had purchased it in $35-million dollar on March 2005. However, Yahoo’s own destiny is not clear so for as Microsoft Corporation has been bidding to purchase Yahoo since last couple of months.
