Lucknow, Oct 22 (IANS) A newly married couple was thrown off a running train here Wednesday when the husband allegedly tried to resist a bid to molest his wife. The police, however, suspect the involvement of the girl's brother, who was against the marriage, in the incident.
The husband, Pappu Sharma, died on the spot. The wife, Abhilasha, was critically injured and was admitted to a hospital.
The police claim to have gathered clues after questioning Abhilasha and hope to solve the case soon.
'According to the initial conversation with Abhilasha, we found out that four men tried to molest her and when her husband protested, they pushed them from the train near the Mallahaur railway station in the early hours,' inspector Tripurari Pandey of the government railway police told IANS.
The police, however, said there was more to the case than meets the eye.
'Her brother called her on Pappu's mobile and we also heard the conversation. He asked her to keep quiet and tell the police that it was an accident,' Pandey said.
Abhilasha admitted that she ran away with Pappu and since then her brother was after Pappu's life.
'We suspect that Abhilasha's brother engaged professional criminals to eliminate Pappu and in a bid to save him, she also fell from the train,' Pandey claimed.
According to the police, the couple from Bihar was on way to Ambala in Haryana, where Pappu was a daily wage factory labourer.
They are from Purnia district in Bihar and boarded the Amrapali Express for Ambala.
Pandey said according to Abhilasha, the men boarded the train at Purnia and started teasing her.
A police team has been sent to Bihar to nab the accused and another team will also be sent to Ambala.
