If one tries to sort out problem, another pulls one’s leg. This is the current situation of politics what is happening in Tamil Nadu over Hogenakkal water project issue.
After realising that aggressive statements and violent demonstrations do nothing rather precipitating the issue, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi appealed to the people to have patience on the Hogenakkal issue. He tried his best although a bit later to calm the burning situation, which was certainly the need of the hour.
But, the recent charge by Tamil Nadu Opposition party AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa that the Hogenakkal was put on hold owing to Karunanidhi expecting a cabinet berth for his daughter Kanimozhi, is sure a unsuccessful try to aggravate the crisis.
However, Karunanidhi rejected the accusation and questioned Jayalalithaa whether anybody in Karnataka had powers to induct her daughter into the Union Cabinet.
The former chief minister Jayalalithaa are resentfully trying to make political gain out of it and are busy in blame-game instead of making common and constructive cause with the state government.
The AIADMK charge is surely the reflection of an unmindful and unthoughtful act. She must know who suffers, who become the victims of the riots if take place? It is neither she nor any politicians generally. It is the common man, who becomes the victims of the dirty politics. Where was she, when the violence erupted in Karnataka against Tamilians as well as in her state too and caused the damage of endless public private property?
Even a blackout ordeal was passed against Tamil cinemas, newspapers, and programmes on TV channels. Many public properties were smashed during the protest and spread a current of shock among the people across the whole state.
All the opposition parties in states as well as at the Centre must need to understand their responsibility in running a successful government, which relies equally on the opposition’s shoulder, if not more than the ruling party.
The Cauvery river water dispute is long standing and complicated and demands time to justifiably solve out in constitutional manner. As Karnataka is gradually heading towards the assembly election, the behaviour of the political parties can be understood, though not be termed justified.
In the election period no party would dare to take risk on this sensitive issue, which has engulfed both states since long years.
DMK chief Karunanidhi realised that the meaningful talks on the project can only be held with the elected government in Karnataka. The assembly election in Karnataka is due to be held in May this year. However he undoubtedly said the project was put on hold temporarily till Karnataka’s election and not has been postponed forever.
Karunanidhi has ruled out completely any relation of the project with the hydroelectric power generation or irrigation and there is no question of building dam on the Karnataka side of the border. The project will only use 1.4 tmcft of water from Tamil Nadu’s allotted share of the Cauvery water.
The Cauvery-Hogenakkal issue can be resolved best if both the government ready for the voluntary undertakings. Tamil Nadu should take drastic measure by agreeing to reduce its share of the Cauvery water awarded by the Cauvery Waters Dispute Tribunal and conversely, Karnataka should accept the drinking water scheme and withdraw any territorial claim in the area.
Everyone should wait for the peaceful dialogue between the two elected government and escape from the aggressive statements.
